There are still a few small groups of fisher man who do the practice of Otter Fishing in Bangladesh. This otter fishing technic is more than 1000 years old is still alive here. Because of the uniqueness of this almost disappearing technic of fishing with otters in the southern part of Bangladesh, this finishing method has drawn big attention from different media agency as Aljzeera, Times, BBC and many others. The ancient technique that still lasts in the country. In China around 607 AD, It was practiced, and written in the book by Marco Polo on the Yangtze River in the 13th century. 

This otter fishing tour will give you an opportunity to experience how the fisherman catch the fishing using their otters and in addition to this, you will also see the how the climate change is impacting on this old technic of fishing and lives of the otters and how the number of otters is getting less with the time passed by. You also will see how the master, the fishermen, of these otters, are taking care of them and you might be questioning that the otter is oppressed but actually these fishermen are taking care of them as like their own child as otters are helping them to their livelihood. The otter fishing in Bangladesh is on the way to disappear and a tour in their locality might encourage the fishermen to prolong this fading heritage for a bit longer period.

Day 1: Early morning journey to Norail, the otter fishing village:

Your driver and guide will come to pick you up from your hotel/residence at 8 am in the morning and start the journey toward Norail which is 200 kilometers from Dhaka, a district located in the southern part of Bangladesh. On route, we will experience the beautiful countryside and we will cross the biggest river of Bangladesh Padma in India it is called the Ganges. This river will give you an experience of what role the river in our country in our day to day life and see the beauty of riverine Bangladesh. There are two ways of crossing this river either we continue by the same vehicle and the ferry will cross the river along with the car and the other way is to take the shared speed boat and in a faster speed, you will cross the river and get another car to continue the trip further. We expect to reach our destination before lunch. We take lunch and have some rest.     We will have some time to rest and, in the afternoon, we will be visiting the fishermen village and see the main attraction of our tour that is catching fish with the fisher men’s boat in the river of Chitra. We will do this activity for the duration of 3 hours and we will get back to the hotel for the night stay.

 

Day 2: Experiencing Fisherman's Life and visiting Museum of SM Sultan:

Today we will have a walk through the village to discover the green villages and experience the people of life and talking to them, interacting with smiling village children on the route. While talking to the fishermen we will also find the cause of disappearing this old technic of fishing, the change of climate how it is impacting the smaller number of fishermen and otters. We will also visit the museum of SM Sultan; the artist is very famous for his work in painting and drawing.  After lunch, we will start our return journey towards Dhaka on the same route and drop you at the hotel with a nice memory of catching fishes with otters.

Children in the village

During your at Norail sometimes curious village children will be always around. Don't hesitate, they do not often see Europian or American tourists. So, they will be with you all the way, better if you can carry some candy for them with which will make a closer relationship with them and take it as fun. They will observe you in so deeply and comparing their skin color with you. 

Basic facilities for accommodation

The hotel you will stay in the village please bear in mind that we will be unable to provide all the facilities that you get in the city hotel. But, we can ensure that the facilities you will get there will be clean accommodations. 

What to ware ?

As Bangladesh is a majority Muslim country and has a conservative attitude toward dress. In this regard, a modest dress is always welcomed. In the metropolitan cities western dress will not be any problem but in the rural area better to be a bit modestly dressed to receive respect from the locals.

Taking Photos

In general, people like to be in the frame of foreigners even sometimes feel very proud to be captured and give a willing pose in front of the camera which you will not find anywhere in the world. However, it is better to take permission before taking any pictures especially of any young girls, soldiers and tribal people.
