The historic 200 years old structure, The Baliati Palace, once located on the bank of Gazikhali river which is demised interim of the time at Saturia Thana of Manikganj district in the village of Baliati. It is on the lush and sprawling premise which occupy nearly 16000 meters of the area surrounded by a high enclosure wall pierced by three identical gateways, surmounted with a lion and there are altogether 200 rooms available inside.
Unfortunately, it is a less known tourist spot in Bangladesh to the outer world. It is one of the premium examples of 19th-century monuments of the Renaissance colonial style in Bangladesh. Govinda Ram Shaha who was a big salt merchant in the middle of the 18th century constructed this palace.
Dosh-ani-zamindar bari
A story of more than a hundred and fifty years, the Baliati Zamindars were still a force to be figured within Bangladesh, a distance about 35 miles northwest of Dhaka and 5 miles east of Manikgonj.
In history, we also find that the palace used to be recognized as “Dosh-ani-Zaminder bari” because of the inheritance of a portion of the main complex from Roy Chand by the well-wishers of his first wife among the Zaminders.
Kishorilal Roy Chowdhury and Roybahadur Harendra Kumer Roy Chowdhury soon realized the requirement of knowledge and that compelled them to establish the Jagarnath College and K.L Jubily High school in Dhaka city.
Description of the palace
The Baliati Zaminderbari formerly consisted of five similar but are separate blocks. The south façade of grand palace presents an attractive frontage of about 400 feet of the extant four blocks of the palace, The other two central blocks are two-storied and the remaining 2 terminals are three-storied.
The central block of the upper story has a decorative hall called Rong Mohal, which is presently used as a museum. The supercilious surrounding walls of the magnificent Zaminder complex are interposed by three superb gateways, identical in their architectural landscapes.
This extraordinary architecture has been acquired by the Bangladesh archeological department since 1987 and has been given a new name “Baliati Palace” as protected cultural property. At the backside of the palace you will find one pond with four Ghat (the down sloppy stairs on the bank to reach up to the water level) and on the other side of that pond, you will find a series of sanitary of the lavatory.
